KABUL): A senior official of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) on has said the government would not allow anyone to take undue benefit of their civil rights.

Mohammad Farid Mamondzai, heading a probe team, said this at his meetings with protestors and local officials in northern Samangan province.

Last week, two protestors were killed and more than a dozen others wounded during a clash with police in Aibak, the provincial capital. Five policemen were among the injured.

The incident happened when armed supporters of Senator Asif attacked the office of Governor Khairullah Anosh.   Police fired in the air, but two protestors were killed and eight others wounded by the senator’s supporters, the alleged.

But Ziauddin Zia, the provincial council head, claimed the governor’s bodyguards and police had inflicted casualties on protesters. The protest was peaceful but police opened fire, he said, adding the governor was involved in administrative and moral corruption.

A statement from IDLG said government-appointed investigators, led by Mamondzai, visited Samangan and heard the views of the authorities and demonstrators.

The official said the findings would be submitted soon to President Hamid Karzai. “The government won’t let anyone misuse their civil freedoms and rights.” Civil movements should not lead to tension and violence, he added.
