KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): Residents of Burka district in northeastern Kunduz province on Saturday claimed illegal armed individuals had intensified their activities ahead of April elections.

Coming all the way from Burka, a number of residents visited the Cultural and Media Relationship Foundation Office in Kunduz City to register their complaint.

One of them was Asadullah Zarifi, who said militants and illegal armed men in Tangi Murch and Flol areas of the district were creating insecurity.

“If the government does not take any action against the influential groups, residents will not be able to take part in the elections,” he said.

Another resident, Mullah Noor Ahmad, who is a school principal, told Pajhwok Afghan News unknown gunmen kidnapped him some time ago, but was freed as a result of public uprising against the kidnappers, who belonged to an illegal armed group in the area.

But provincial police spokesman Javed Basharat rejected the claims, saying there was no security concern in the district.

He said a search operation would be launched soon again illegal armed individuals in the town.
