MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN Azam, has been killed along with an accomplice during a security operation, an official said on Sunday.

Azam was killed by the Afghan National Army’s Special Forces Unit personnel during the ongoing operation launched few days ago in the district, Balkh police spokesman Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the forces had seized so far six Kalashnikovs with as many magazines during the offensive. He hoped the death of Azam would leave positive impact on the security situation in the town.

A Mazar-i-Sharif resident Mohammad Din said he was happy with the outcome of the operation by the Afghan Special Forces Unit. He said the Afghan forces had the ability to unilaterally conduct operations.

The Taliban have so far said nothing about Azam’s death that comes two weeks after nine Taliban militants were killed in Sholgar district.
