Expired, low-quality medicines torched

JALALABAD(Pajhwok): Twenty-five types of expired and low-quality medicines were set ablaze after their collection from various parts in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, officials said.

Public health officials said the medicines torched in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, included those which had been kept under unsuitable conditions.

Public Health Director Dr. Baz Mohammad Sherzad said the medicines were torched in the presence of a health team.

He said some of the medicines had been stored in substandard go-downs and others manufactured by companies ignoring the established medical standards.

The public health director called on the people to cooperate with health officials in doing away with such medicines.

But Dr. Najibullah Sahibzada, head of the Medicine Sellers Union, said the public health department had set afire only three types of expired medicines seized and misappropriated the rest.

A Jalalabad resident, Seer Ahmad, appreciated the public health department’s action, saying some pharmaceutical firms played with lives of people.

He said most medicines sold in the market were either of low-quality or had their dates expired.
