KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai expressed his deep grief and sorrow on Monday over the death of Ustad Sadiq Pasarlai, a legendary Pashtu poet, who died last night at a hospital in India aged 85.

Pasarlai, a renowned Pashtu poet, died after a protracted illness at a hospital in India, where he had been under treatment for multiple diseases.

A statement issued from the Presidential Palace said President Karzai was saddened over the demise of Pasarlai.

“Ustad Pasarlai devoted his entire life to study and efforts at promoting culture. With his abilities and potential, Ustad Pasarlai well established his name and place among prominent poets at a very young age,” Karzai said in his tribute.

The president said Pasarlai had intensified his cultural activities during the jihad period and living as a refugee.

He published a journal “Sapidi” and made efforts at promoting Afghanistan’s culture as one of leading culturists, said Karzai, recalling Pasarlai’s prose and poetry  had deep effects, which helped promoted the Afghan culture.

Karzai said the services and contribution of Usad Pasarlai to Pashtu poetry and culture had a great value and his death was a huge loss.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, fellow poets, writers and the people of Kunduz. May Allah Almighty forgive him and award his family the courage and patience to bear this irreparable loss.”
