KABUL (Pajhwok): Strongly condemning Thursday’s gun attack on volleyball playing boys in Laghman, President Hamid Karzai has ordered a probe into the deaths and assistance to the bereaved families, his office said on Friday.
A group of gunmen opened fire at boys on a volleyball court in Sakhri area of Alingar district on Thursday afternoon, killing five of them, according to the governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak.
Suspecting insurgents behind the attack, he told Pajhwok Afghan News the slain boys were students.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said President Karzai denounced the attack “in the strongest possible terms.”
Referring to the killings of volleyball players, the president said the targeted killings of Afghans had lately been intensified.
“These kinds of targeted killings and pressures cannot stop Afghans from developing their country,” he remarked.
The statement said President Karzai, soon after the incident, contacted Laghman governor and asked him to investigate it thoroughly and extend the bereaved families all possible assistance as soon as possible.
Governor Fazlullah Wahidi has strongly condemned the incident as “inhuman and un-Islamic act.”
He said the enemies could not tolerate Afghanistan achievements, thus attacking players.
The incident comes three days after militants shot dead three boys playing football in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province.
