HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Thousands of protestors, condemning a botched suicide attack on Ismail Khan, former water and energy minister, on Sunday asked the government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans in support of Khan, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the attackers. They urged immediate action from the authorities.
Parliamentarian from Herat Qazi Nazir Ahmad Hanifi, speaking to the highly charged protestors, denounced suicide attacks as violative of Islamic teachings and Afghan culture.
The US and Britain should ensure durable stability in Afghanistan, otherwise the country would plunge into the kind of turmoil seen after the Soviet withdrawal, he warned.
Abdul Waheed Qatali, the provincial council head, asked the Taliban to shun violence and join hands with the government for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Syed Abdullah, a demonstrator, told Pajhwok Afghan News he was there to vehemently condemn the life attempt on his leader.
The bomber on foot blew himself up in front of a mosque where Khan was present to offer Friday prayers. The blast occurred as worshippers started coming out after the prayers.
