Journalists won’t bow to pressures: Majidi

Journalists won’t bow to pressures: Majidi

Jan 27, 2014 - 14:39

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Despite facing a wave of threats and pressures from militants, armed groups and government functionaries, journalists would continue to discharge their duty with a sense of commitment, their representative said on Monday.

Zabihullah Majidi, the Afghanistaninfo-icon Cultural and Media Relations head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the journalist community would continue to educate and inform people about day-to-day developments.

It was a matter of great concern that journalists were being killed, threatened and humiliated in the country but the government had no strategy to deal with the situation, he complained.

He complained Governor Ghulam Sakhi Baghlani was not extending cooperation to journalists, depriving the entire population of Kunduz of their right to information on issues of national importance.

“Elections are to be held soon and if the government fails to extend support to journalists, Afghanistan’s problems could multiply,” he warned.

Earlier in the week, scores of reporters in the northeastern zone staged a protest against the murder of reporter Noor Ahmad Noori. They demanded a probe into the case and stringent action against the killer.

Rahmatullah Hurmat, the head of the journalists union in northeastern provinces, said: “The freedom of speech and media is on the verge of extinction in the country. The government should take steps to protect its hard-won gains.”
