KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) would provide each presidential candidate with three armoured and as many ordinary vehicles, as well as 35 police personnel, to ensure their security during election campaign, an official said on Tuesday.

MoI spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told a press conference in Kabul the decision had been taken at a meeting of the National Security Council. He asked the 11 contenders to receive their vehicles and introduce their guards to the ministry.

Presidential and provincial council elections are scheduled to be held on April 5 this year, with the two-month campaign for presidential polls starting on February 2.

As many as 323 polling centres had been added to 6,845 polling centres, the MoI spokesman said. On January 14, a report from security agencies said only 414 polling stations would not be secure.

In order to ensure tight security, Siddiqui asked the presidential hopefuls to inform the relevant agencies two days prior to planned campaign programmes.
