KABUL Independent Democratic Party (AIDP) announced on Thursday its support to presidential contender Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
Mohammad Amin Wakman, the AIDP chief, told journalists the party was working to promote national unity, curb prejudice and hatred.
“Today, we decided to support Dr. Abdullah in the presidential ballot,” he added. Presidential and provincial council elections are to be held on April 5.
He said the party had held meetings with other presidential hopefuls but they finally decided to support Abdullah, who could steer the country out of crisis.
The AIDP would strive for peace in the country and shape a better future for the Afghans, he promised. The AIDP is a splinter group of the Afghan Millat Party.
Dr. Abdullah thanked the party for lending its support to him and urged people to join political groups to take active part in the nation-building enterprise.
