KABUL on Sunday strongly condemned the killing of two members of the election campaign team of presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.

Secretary-General’s Special Representative Ján Kubiš expressed his deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives in the criminal act.

On Saturday evening, unidentified gunmen shot dead two members of Abdullah’s campaign office in western Herat province.

The attack came on the eve of the election campaign as the country prepares for the presidential and provincial polls in April.

“This coward action constitutes a violent intimidation of electoral candidates and their supporters, and cannot be tolerated,” he said in a statement from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

He urged authorities to take necessary measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and called upon the security forces to be on heightened vigilance over the coming weeks leading to the elections.

Afghans should be able to exercise their fundamental right to express their democratic will and to vote in an atmosphere free of intimidation, the UNAMA head said.
