KABUL for its people.

At the 2012 Tokyo Conference, EU held out a commitment to supporting development in Afghanistan until 2020 with focus on service-delivery programmes.

A day earlier, the Central Statistical Organisation of Afghanistan released its 2011-2012 National Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (NRVA) report — the most comprehensive and updated single source of socio-economic statistics.

The EU sponsored the series of NRVA statistical studies since their first edition in 2005.

“For almost 10 years, the NRVA series has assisted policy-makers in the challenging task of identifying, designing and monitoring meaningful socio-economic policies for Afghanistan,” said Milko Van Gool, head of EU Cooperation in Afghanistan.

Surveys for the latest NRVA report were carried out from May 2011 to August 2012 among 21,000 households totalling more than 150,000 individuals across all the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, a statement from EU said.

Results indicate improvements in education, access to safe drinking water and gender equality, but also stagnation — even deterioration — in food security and poverty levels among specific segments of the population.

It added the results suggested the need for protracted and sustained levels of investment and Official Development Aid to continue improving the living conditions of Afghan people.
