CHARIKAR with nine provinces in the north, after a three-day closure forced by heavy snowfall and avalanches, officials said.

Gen. Rajab, the pass maintenance chief in central Parwan province, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the highway had been reopened, thanks to non-stop efforts lasting three days by maintenance officials.

He said first they cleared the northern side allowing vehicles from Kabul to proceed and then passengers going to Kabul were allowed movement.

Gen. Rajab said 46 avalanches hit southern Salang over the past three days and three lashed the northern part, adding four possible avalanches had been prevented.

Maintenance workers have been trying to facilitate commuters and ensure a smooth flow of traffic on both sides of the highway.

Naeemullah, Jabalul Saraj district traffic chief, said trapped passengers had been in deep trouble to due harsh weather conditions, but there was no untoward incident during the three-day closure.

“Happily, the road reopened today and no one got trapped or hit by avalanches. The highway will be fully cleared very soon,” he said.
