LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Police on Wednesday said they were ready to provide security for presidential and provincial council candidates campaigning in southern Helmand province.

Police chief Gen. Mohammad Hakim Angar told a meeting police and army would remain neutral during the two-month electioneering period and would secure the election process.

With tribal elders and religious scholars present, Angar said influential individuals had been invited to the meeting to give advice and share their suggestions with police force to better discharge responsibilities.

He said the police had become professional and had no links with any political groups. He warned police officers of action if found guilty of violating laws and doing politics.

Tribal elder Ahlullah Obaidi told the meeting said if the government wanted professional and corruption-free police, it should increase their salaries, encourage them and assist families of martyred police officers.
