SHARAN/LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A woman delivered her baby on the way to hospital but both died due to road blockades in southeastern Paktika province on Thursday.
Himmat Khan, a taxi driver, told Pajhwok Afghan News the woman gave birth to the baby inside his car in Orgun district at about 10am. He said the road had been clogged by heavy snow.
In southern Helmand province, scores of houses have been damaged by rains and snowfall over the past one week. The governor’s spokesman said 30 houses had collapsed in Marja district and a dozen in Nad Ali.
Omar Zwak said the government was assessing the scale of the losses. Once the survey was completed, victims would be compensated, he promised.
Elsewhere in the country, roads linking the capital of central Logar province with Kharwar, Baraki Barak and Azra districts have been closed as a result of the snowfall.
Public Works Director Eng. Baqi Stanikzai said they had signed road-clearing agreements with a number of companies, but the governor had scrapped them. His department was unable to deal with the situation, he added.
