CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): A key snow-clogged pass was cleared and reopened for traffic in central Parwan province on Friday, local authorities said.
Snowstorms and avalanches once blocked the Salang Pass on Thursday, leaving a large number of vehicles stranded on both sides of the 12,000-foot tunnel.
Gen. Abdul Rajab, in charge of the tunnel’s maintenance, told Pajhwok Afghan News the route was reopened at 2.00pm as a result of several hours of efforts.
The two kilometres Russian-built tunnel connects Kabul with nine provinces in the north. Journey on this route in the winter often leads to deadly incidents as a result of avalanches.
