‘Security pact useless in absence of peace’

In an interview with the state-controlled Turkish Radio and Television (TRT), the president said: “The Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the US … should lead to peace in Afghanistan.”

According to a statement from the Presidential Palace, Karzai reiterated his position on the deal. “I know many Afghan Taliban and the US, therefore, should help us initiate a process of reconciliation.”

The war on terrorism should not be fought in Afghan villages, he stressed, saying: “I have always emphasised the strategy America and NATO forces have adopted to fight terrorism is wrong.” He urged Americans to focus on eradicating terrorist hideouts and choking their funding sources.

The Americans would decide on staying in the region based on their own interests, but their presence should bring peace and security to the Afghans, the president maintained. When assured of lasting stability, the Afghans would remain America’s partners, he explained.

In response to a question about the reconciliation process, the president said there was a clear distinction peace talks and exploitation of the situation in Afghanistan. “We desire peace dialogue, but won’t allow foreigners to trade on the political situation in Afghanistan.”

The Taliban would enter negotiations with the High Peace Council as soon as possible, he hoped, expecting a high turnout in the April presidential and provincial council elections.

He went on to praise Afghan security forces’ courage, saying the nation was grateful for the countless sacrifices and dedication of their forces. “We are deeply saddened by the fact that our security forces are losing their lives; but we are proud of them defending the homeland.”
