GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Residents demanded on Saturday the deployment of Afghan Local Police (ALP) in all districts of southeastern Paktia province.

The ALP force has so far been raised and deployed to three districts of Paktia — Zazai Aryub, Samkani and Ahmadkhel. The province has 13 districts.

Residents and local officials in the three towns commend the ALP’s role as important in maintaining security and say the force should be deployed to all the districts.

An elder in Samkani district, Haji Hakim, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the establishment of ALP had resulted in improved security situation in the town. “The security situation has improved the day the ALP was deployed to Samkani,” the elder said.

He said the main reason behind the militia success was that that the force personnel belonged to the same community they served.

An elder in Laja Mangal district, Haji Zahir, said residents of his district had observed the ALP members behaving well with people in Ahmadkhel district. “So we also want the force to be established in our district.”

The elder said they had repeatedly requested the government to deploy ALP in their district, but failed to elicit a positive response.

Some residents of Janikhel district also said they wanted the deployment of ALP to improve the security situation there.

A dweller of the district, Gul Wali Shah, said the security situation in other districts had improved after the ALP deployment and it was the reason a majority of Janikhel residents wanted to the force to be established there.

He said reconstruction projects could not be implemented in Janikhel district due insecurity.

Provincial council head, Shayesta Jan Ahadi, believed the ALP deployment could yield positive result when the force was not biased to a particular tribe.

Paktia police chief Brig. Gen. Zalmai Oryakhel, confirmed residents of some districts had been demanding asked the deployment of ALP forces in their areas.

He said the issue had been shared with the Ministry of Interior, adding 50 ALP members, who had their military training completed, would be deployed to the Zurmat district soon.

The militia has been deployed to many districts across the country and has been praised for rendering more sacrifices than the national police. However, there have also been complaints accusing the forces of mistreating locals.
