KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Interior on Sunday said security for 24 polling stations, previously considered as insecure in three provinces, has been ensured.

MoI spokesman Siddiqui Siddique told a press conference in Kabul 19 of the sites were located in Ghor, three in Kapisa and two in Badakhshan provinces.

He said currently 390 polling sites in 11 provinces remained under high security threats, but Afghan forces were making efforts to ensure these sites were protected.

“We will do our best to improve security around all polling stations over the next weeks,” Siddique said, adding that security forces would not allow militants to disrupt the election process.

The official said police had so far been able to protect election workers, campaigners and presidential candidates and the forces had the ability to keep security during the campaign.

Security organs, in their report last month, said they would not be able to provide security for 414 of the 6845 polling sites in 11 provinces.

But a week back, the MoI issued a report on election security, indicating the number of insecure polling sites had increased from 414 to 420.
