JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The deputy governor of eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday underlined the role of religious scholars in creating awareness among the people regarding the crucial elections slated for April 5.

Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal expressed the view while addressing the concluding session of a two-day seminar on “Peace and Religious Scholars’ Role in Elections,” attended by Ulema from Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces.

He said religious scholars should convey the message of peace from mosques to help ensure greater participation of male and female voters in the landmark ballot.

Haji Abdul Saboor Tauhidi, a religious scholar from Nuristan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the seminar would yield positive results in terms of enhanced awareness among the people about the elections.

“Religious leaders can play a decisive role in peace building and creating awareness among the masses about participation in the polls. It is high time for Ulema to play their due role so that elections are made a success,” he added.
