LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Four insurgents were killed and as many others wounded during an overnight NATO airstrike in the Nawzad district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Tuesday.
The air raid took place in the Dana area, where a group of armed rebels had gathered to launch attacks on police posts and close the road connecting the district with the provincial capital, Lashkargah.
The town’s administrative chief, Syed Murad Sadat, told Pajhwok Afghan News the dead included a Pakistani militant. “A number of Taliban had recently gone to Quetta from Nawzad and they would possibly launch terror attacks on return. They will try to sabotage the elections.”
Sadat said Afghan security forces had the ability to frustrate nefarious designs of insurgents and secure the elections.
Without commenting on the Nawzad airstrike, a Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi claimed a large number of Afghan and foreign troops had been killed and maimed during attacks in Greshk, Nad Ali, Sangin and Washer districts.
