LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Three new turbines are set to be added to the Greshk dam in southern Helmand province to increase its power-generating capacity to 4.8 megawatts, an official said on Thursday.

Eng Faizullah, the water and energy director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the installation of the three new turbines would take two years.

“The two outdated old turbines will be replaced with the new ones to increase power production from two to 4. 8 megawatts,” he said.

He added the installation process would be carried out by an Indian company with financial support from Denmark and the Asian Development Bank.

Faizuallah said, adding the fresh move would ensure electricity supply to the entire Greshk district and areas located in close proximity to the district.

Greshk district chief, Mohammad Fahim, said work on the dam had been suspended for the last two years due to insecurity in the area. But the situation has considerably improved now.

Some residents asked the government to accelerate the pace of work. “I have heard repeatedly the government will start reconstruction of the dam, but practical steps are yet to be taken,” said Bismillah, a resident.
