KABUL’s participation in the election process, asking the government to maintain security for them.

NUPA official Farzana Farahmand told a gathering in Kabul that negative customs, insecurity and lack of awareness were the main challenges to women playing an active political role.

She asked the government and the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to pave the ground for women’s enthusiastic participation in the April 5 presidential and provincial council elections.

Farahmand also asked religious scholars to encourage women’s participation in the election process through public awareness programmes. She said Afghans should not prevent their wives and daughters from taking part in the polls.

Despite progress in different areas over the past decade, many Afghan women were still suffering from domestic violence and negative traditions, she lamented.

NUPA was created two months go by Abdur Rahim Ayubi — a public representative from Kandahar people in the Wolesi Jirga.

A resident of Bagrami area, Pari Gul who took part in the meeting, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “I have received my voter card and will vote for a candidate who can solve our problems,”
