KABUL (Pajhwok): A group of gunmen has robbed several jewellery shops in the Shindand district of western Herat province, a public representative said on Friday.
Provincial council member Dur Muhammad Zarifi Zarifi told Pajhwok Afghan News the 20-member gang looted shops, 50 meters from a police station and an army centre
After beating market security guards, the gunmen decamped with jewellery and valuables worth millions of afghanis, he said, blasting the security forces for incompetence.
Abdul Noor, the district chief, confirmed the jewellery theft and accused police and intelligence officials of negligence. “Around 3am, police and intelligence personnel were informed of the incident. But they are yet to visit the site. “
But Abdul Qayyum Noorzai, the Shindand police chief, denied receiving any information about the theft. Apart from militant activity in the district, politicians interfered in police affairs, he complained.
