KABUL (Pajhwok): Journalists on Friday called off their strike after they were assured action against doctors who allegedly harassed and beaten a reporter in western Herat province.

The Afghan Journalists Defense Committee in a statement said the strike was ended after the provincial public health director tendered an apology on behalf of the doctor community.

The body said journalists went on strike after their colleague was harassed and beaten by doctors.

Following a scuffle with doctors, journalists established a protest camp in front of the governor’s office to express their anger.

Public Health Director Ghulam Saeed Rashed, who met with the protesting journalists, tendered apologies on behalf of the doctors.

Attorney Maria Bashir promised opening a probe into the matter to reveal the facts and take legal action against those responsible.

Journalists handed over a list of doctors they accused of harassing their colleague before ending their protest.
