KABUL class cricketing nation.

Put into bat after losing the toss, Afghanistan set Bangladesh a competitive 255 runs target after a dramatic recovery from a top-order collapse.

Asghar Stanikzai (90 not out) and Samiullah Shenwari (81) together added 164 for the sixth wicket after the side was reduced to 90-5 at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.

Nawroz Mangal scored 24 while Najibullah Zadran made 21 in just Afghanistan’s third match against a full member of the International Cricket Council.

Stanikzai hit six fours and three sixes in his unbeaten knock, his fourth half-century and second against any full member. He scored 66 against Australia in Sharjah. He brought up Saturday’s 50 with a six over long-on off Rubel Hossain.

It was also Shenwari’s first half-century against any top flight opposition. He has had three 50-plus score with the highest, 82, against Kenya. He was run out as a result of misunderstanding with Stanikzai in the second-last ball of the innings.

Stanikzai was also dropped while on 72 and 77 by Imrul Kayes. Bangladesh’s situation worsened when Sohag Gazi left the ground with a palm injury after trying to stop a shot of the Afghan batsman.

The Bangladeshi battling line collapsed at 222 in the 48th over, with Mohammad Nabi securing three wickets. Hamid Hassan and Shahpur Zadran shared two wickets each and Shinwari and Mirwais Ashraf one each.
