KABUL (Pajhwok): At least nine militants were killed and five others injured as a result of a military operation in eastern Laghman province on Sunday, officials said.

Sarhadi Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the offensive by Afghan forces was conducted to drive militants from Sangar area of Alingar district.

The dead included a commander and the brother of a Taliban commander was among those arrested, he said, identifying him as Mohammad Amin, a suicide attacks facilitator.

Zwak said the Afghan forces suffered no casualties during the operation.  The Taliban confirmed the deaths of only three fighters in the offensive, but claimed the rest of those killed and arrested were civilians.

Separately, an explosives-laden vehicle was seized in central Maidan Wardak province, officials said on Sunday.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesperson, said National Directorate of Security (NDS) officials detected and seized the vehicle in the Syedabad district.
