LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Growing targeted killings in southern Helmand province sent shock waves among residents and security officials in the area, locals and an official said Sunday.

Provincial reforms council member, Abdul Ahad Masomi, told Pajhwok Afghan News targeted killings had witnessed great surge in recent months which virtually left the population worried.

Masomi urged intelligence and security officials to work out stringent measures to prevent the targeted killings of leading elders and officials.

Haji Lal Jan, a resident of Sapian area of Lashkargah, said people would lose their confidence on Afghan forces if they failed to prevent the deteriorated law and order.

“Many government officials are victims of such incidents but majority of civilians are being targeted,” Lal Jan said, adding mafia groups were mostly involved in such cases.

Abdul Salam, another resident of the provincial capital said, the issue had worried people of the area and “the incidents have increased over the past one month with seven incidents took place.”

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hakim Angar, provincial police chief, confirmed the incidents had soared in the recent days and said that “some of these incidents have links to militant but most of the incidents are of criminal nature.”

He pledged Afghan forces would take practical and tangible measures to control the situation without further delay.
