LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least 13 militants and three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were lost to a battle that saw the forces recapturing a Taliban-controlled area in southern Helmand province, officials said Sunday.

The clash broke out during an operation by Afghan forces to recapture Miramandab area of Greshk district, Mohammad Fahmi, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“Miramandab is a wide plain area, where the Taliban were in control over the past four years, but Afghan security forces recaptured it after fierce clashes with militants on Saturday,” he said. The operation was ongoing, he said.

Last week, Helmand governor’s spokesman Umar Zwak told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghan forces had launched an operation in the province to improve security in the lead up to the April 5 elections.

The Taliban did not comment on the incident but claimed Afghan and foreign forces suffered heavy casualties in attacks in Greskh and Nad Ali districts.

Also in Helmand, two militants and one Afghan Local Police (ALP) member were killed and two others wounded during a clash in the Kajaki district.

Provincial police spokesman Abdul Ahad Chopan said the clash occurred after militants stormed an ALP post in Kajaki late on Saturday.
