Pakistani, Indian leaders condole Fahim’s death

KABUL.

Marshal Fahim died on Sunday of natural causes, a presidential spokesman said, adding the government had announced a three-day mourning period, during which the national flags would be lowered half-mast.

In a message, Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain said the people of Pakistan shared the grief of Fahim’s death with the people of Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his message extended his sympathies to Fahim’s family and government and the people of Afghanistan. Both the Pakistani leader “prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.”

India Vice President Hamid Ansari also condoled Fahim’s death. In a message, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he learnt of the death with great sadness.
Singh called Fahim a brave and fearless military commander, whose contribution to Afghanistan’s stabilization and reconstruction after over three decades of war and conflict would always be remembered.
“Marshal Fahim was also a close friend of India. We shall never forget his personal contribution to nurturing and strengthening the India Afghanistan strategic partnership.”
