Swedish journalist killed in Kabul

KABUL (Pajhwok): A Swedish journalist was killed on Tuesday after unknown gunmen opened fire at him in the high-security zone of Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district in Kabul, the Swedish Embassy confirmed, and Afghan police said they had arrested two suspects.

Swedish Embassy counselor Christian Nilsson told a foreign news agency that Nils Horner, the Asia correspondent for Swedish Radio, was killed on Tuesday. Horner was in his 50s.

Kabul Criminal Investigation Department Syed Gul Agha Hashimi said two suspects had been arrested in the case. He said the journalist died while being treated at the hospital.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the Swedish citizen was shot injured in the 10h police district and died on his way to hospital.

The foreign citizen came under attack in the Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district around 11:15am, he said. 

Without giving details, Stanikzai said the victim’s Afghan translator had been detained by police, but the attackers fled.
