SHARAN (Pajhwok): Doctors and residents of southeastern Paktika province on Wednesday demanded more healthcare equipment, including beds and heaters.

Sharan Civil Hospital Director Dr Chinar Gul Siddiqui said about a million patients visited the facility for medical treatment but doctors faced lack of resources.

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, he said: “Given the huge number of patients, hospital beds should increase from 60 to 110.”

He argued the traditional heaters using firewood harmed patient health and blackened walls. Repainting rooms cost a lot, he added, seeking the heaters’ replacement.

Doctors’ Health Council head Shams also called the absence of a modern heating system and beds a big problem, saying most of patients complained of cold.

“Last year, the Ministry of Public Health promised to increase the number of beds, but the commitment is yet to be honoured,” Shams recalled.

A resident of Sharan, the provincial capital of Paktika, said some patients from neighbouring Ghazni and Paktia provinces also visited the hospital but they had to wait for hours. Mohammad Afzal asked the government to provide the hospital with more beds.
