MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A massive slide of mud and rocks triggered by heavy rains hit a village overnight in the Pashtunkot district of northern Faryab province, destroying 80 homes, an official said on Thursday.
The slide in Purkhasht village occurred around 9:00pm last night, but there were no casualties because residents were quick to take refuge in nearby areas, leaving behind their belongings.
The district chief, Abdul Qader Qaderi, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the destruction of 80 houses in the incident.
He said hundreds of household animals had perished in the slide, but it caused no human losses.
An area resident, Attaullah, said: “On hearing a sound, I went out of home and saw the mound was moving towards the village and then I called on villagers to flee.”
He spent the rainy night under the open skies with his seven-member family and lost all his household items to the slide.
Governor Muhammadullah Batash said a rescue team had been dispatched to the site with food items and medicines.
