KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday called for cooperation among regional countries to strengthen peace and combat the menace of terrorism.
Addressing a function marking Nawroz in Kabul, Karzai hoped the celebrations would bring closer regional countries and enhance cooperation among them in resolving common issues.
The UN chief and leaders of Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Armenia have been invited to the event.
In his speech, the president said: “This festival is a good opportunity for promoting friendly relations.” Terrorism could not be eliminated without cooperation among regional countries, he believed.
Karzai called Central Asian countries were situated in an area blessed with enormous natural resources, but certain problems hinted their development and prosperity.
The festival was originally scheduled to be held in the scenic Paghman district of Kabul. But officials later said the newly-built site was not ready for hosting the celebrations.
