GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Residents on Friday protested in the capital of southeastern Paktia province against the manhandling of a district chief and demanded action against the perpetrators.

Appointed four months ago, Aryub Zazai district’s administrative head Abdur Rahman has been prevented by the governor’s office from assuming office.

Rahman recently accused the governor’s chief of staff of thrashing him following a refusal to pay $8,000 in bribe. But the governor’s spokesman has rejected the allegation.

Scores of residents took to the streets in Gardez, demanding the prosecution of Governor Juma Khan Hamdard for insulting the district chief.

Habibullah, one of the protestors, told Pajhwok Afghan News they would continue their demonstrations if the central government did not meet their demand.

Habibur Rahman, the official’s son, carried his father’s photographs. He urged the Karzai administration, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and UNAMA to heed their call.
