KABUL (Pajhwok): Twenty-three militants have been killed and 24 others wounded in security operation in the run-up to presidential and provincial council elections in various provinces, officials said on Friday.
Four insurgents were caught alive with weapons and munitions during the offensive in Kunar, Ghazni, Herat, Kunduz, Faryab, Maidan Wardak and Kandahar provinces over the past 24 hours, a statement from the Ministry of Defence said.
Pajhwok reporters said five insurgents were killed and several others wounded in Ghazni and Laghman provinces. Two suspected rebels were blown up by the landmine they were planting on the outskirts of Mehtarlam, the governor’s spokesman said.
Sarhadi Zwak added the men belonged to Laghman and the overnight incident was under investigation.
In southern Ghazni province, at least two policemen were killed in a bomb explosion and three militants eliminated in a clash with the army.
The roadside bomb hit a patrol vehicle in Giru district this morning. The governor’s spokesman said, adding two policemen were killed and a third wounded in the blast.
Shafiq Nang told Pajhwok Afghan News three insurgents were killed during an overnight Afghan National Army (ANA) operation in Gilan district. The fighters killed in Shinkai area included two Pakistani citizens.
