QALAT (Pajhwok): Officials of Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Friday said 34 polling stations would remain shut in southern Zabul province because of security concerns.
IEC Director Hashim Durrani said of 81 polling centres, 47 would remain open. Fifteen polling centres will open in the provincial capital but those in remote areas will be closed due to insecurity.
He said Zabul had 10 districts where some of the sites would not open.
Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai, the provincial police chief, said two polling stations had to be closed in Khak Afghan — a district where Taliban had great sway.
However, he said people should come out and cast their vote in a fear-free environment in areas where polling stations would open.
