KABUL to check militants’ movement, particularly on Election Day, the chief of army staff said on Friday.

Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi told a press conference in Kabul that insurgent threats to disrupt Saturday’s presidential and provincial council polls had fizzled out and complete security would be ensured tomorrow.

Afghan refugees entering the country to cast ballots would have to show the authorities their voter cards and other documents, he said, adding they would be allowed to vote once their papers were thoroughly checked.

While praising NATO cooperation in transporting election materials to provinces, the general claimed foreign troops were willing for technical help in case of need.

The army chief said the Ministry of Defence had taken necessary security steps, including negotiations with Pakistan on checking illegal movement across the Durand Line.

Pakistan has promised to beef up Durand Line security to check unauthorised movement, according to Gen. Karimi, who said the Afghan Air Force and border guards had taken effective steps to enhance election security.
