KABUL (Pajhwok): The US Senate Intelligence Committee has voted in favour of making public CIA’s controversial interrogation and detention techniques, including waterboarding and other harsh methods, after the 9/11 attack.

Thursday’s 11-3 vote called for declassifying the shocking results of CIA investigations during President George W. Bush’s administration, said Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who heads the Senate panel.

About 500 pages of the 6,300-page review should be declassified, recommended the lawmakers, including Republicans Saxby Chambliss, Richard Burr of North Carolina and Maine’s Susan Collins.

After the voting, Feinstein said: “The report exposes brutality that stands in stark contrast to our values as a nation. It also points to major problems with the CIA’s management of this program and its interactions with the White House.”

She hoped the declassification process could be completed in a month and the CIA would not drag its feet in opposition to the White House.  “It is now abundantly clear … the CIA did make some serious mistakes and that they haunt us to this day.”

Also on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney renewed Obama’s support for declassifying the document. Spy officials would be asked to conduct the work quickly, he said.

The committee’s vice chairman, Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss, said he had supported declassification to allow the public to make up its own mind. “There was information gleaned from this program which led not only to the takedown of Osama bin Laden but to the interruption and disruption of other terrorist plots.”
