KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A suicide bomber on Monday targeted a convoy of international troops in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, officials said.

The incident took place at around 3:00pm, the governor’s spokesman, Dawal Khan Minapal, told Pajhwok Afghan News. But he gave no further details.

Haji Obaidullah, the administrative head of Maiwand district, said the suicide attack took place on the Kandahar-Herat highway.

He added the bomber rammed his explosives-laden coach into a convoy of the International Security Assistance Force.

Afghan soldiers and civilians suffered no casualties in the blast, Obaidullah said, adding he was unaware of ISAF fatalities.

An eyewitness, Abdul Rahman, said an armoured vehicle of foreign troops caught fire as a result of the blast. The site was cordoned off by NATO soldiers.

Meanwhile, ISAF confirmed its convoy was struck by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan. However, the NATO-led force said nothing about casualties.

As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
