KABUL/SHIBREGHAN (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Saturday around 1,000 marooned families had been evacuated so far in northwestern Jawzjan province, following flash floods that killed at least 107 people and rendered thousands others homeless on Friday night.

The MoD said most of the families marooned in Khwaja Dokoh, Qoush Tipa and Darzab districts of Jawzjan had been evacuated to safety by military helicopters and the 209th Shaheen Military Corps service members.

Five teams of doctors had been dispatched with medicines to floods-hit areas, it said, adding 100 tonnes of food, bottles of potable water, coats, shoes and carpets had been disbursed to the affectees so far.

Jawzjan Governor Baimer Quwainly told Pajhwok Afghan News 400 individuals were evacuated by helicopters in Khwajah Dokoh district, where the floods engulfed 13 villages. He said the operation to shift stranded residents to safer places was still underway.

More than a hundred people had died and tens of others remained missing after the devastating floods emerged in Jawzjan, Faryab, Sar-i-Pul and Badghis provinces following days of heavy rains.

Besides the fatalities in Jawzjan and Faryab, thousands of household animals and standing crops on thousands of acres of land had perished in the natural disaster. Jawzjan governor put the death toll in his province at 60.

Local officials said the aid provided by the government and some organizations was insufficient. They said the government and aid organizations should take urgent measures to assist the affected families.
