Kunduz livestock sector improved remarkably

Kunduz livestock sector improved remarkably

Apr 27, 2014 - 12:53

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The livestock sector has witnessed remarkable improvement in northern Kunduz province, an official said on Sunday.

However, farmers demanded more vaccination, medicines and setting up veterinary clinics in the province.

Mohammad Nabi Raufi, director agricultureinfo-icon department, told Pajhwok Afghan News a total of three and a half million livestock had been counted in the province, including one million goats and sheep.

The building of more veterinary clinics, distribution of early vaccination and creating awareness among farmers would further develop the vital livestock sector in Kunduz, he suggested.

He said the farmers were provided with more than 135 tons of food stuff for their animals during last winter to prevent the loss of animals amid cold waves.

In addition, the Afghan National Army (ANA) evacuated thousands of livestock from snow infested areas of Abdan locality during the last winter.

Raufi said the ratio of livestock loss had been decreased to greater extent and a laboratory had also been established in Kunduz City for the livestock of northeastern zone where animals were being treated free of cost.

Rahmatullah, a resident of Dashti Abdan, said agriculture department was not concerned about the growing diseases threatening livestock.

He said the issue regarding diseases among animals had been shared with officials of the agriculture but no steps could be taken to address our problems.

Kunduz is largely known an agriculture province where economy of 80 percent residents depends on cultivation and livestock.
