SHARANA (Pajhwok): At least 43 insurgents have been killed and 11 others wounded during a clash with Afghan forces followed by an airstrike in Ziruk district of southeastern Paktika province, officials said on Monday.

Mukhlis Afghan, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News dozens of Afghan and Pakistani insurgents launched coordinated attacks on security posts in the district late Sunday night.

The ensuing clash that lasted an hour left 25 attackers dead and seven others wounded, he said, adding another 18 militants were killed and four more wounded after air support from the Afghan Air Force arrived.  

Four Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were lost to the gunfight, said Afghan, who claimed civilians stayed unhurt.

The corpses of militants were laying in Dabook, a mountainous area east of the town, the official said.

Paktika police chief Maj. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullakhel confirmed 43 insurgents had been killed in the incident.

However, Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.
