KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Monday underlined the need for coordination between the global fraternity and his administration in delivering aid to victims of a massive landslide in northeastern Badakhshan province.
Thousands of people were killed last week, trapped and displaced by the landslide that buried the Aab-i-Barik village of Argo district. Rescuers have abandoned the search for the missing, focusing on the rehabilitation effort.
During a meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Jan Kubis at the Presidential Palace here, Karzai said coordination would make international assistance more effective.
A statement from the Palace said that on behalf of the UN, Kubis expressed his condolences to President Karzai and the Afghan people over the tragedy. He said the world body and other organisations had started providing assistance to victims’ families and displaced persons.
Karzai thanked the UN special representative and the international community for sympathizing with the Afghan government and people in the wake of the natural disaster.
