KABUL is one of the 10 priority countries for Canada’s support under the G8 Muskoka Initiative in areas of midwifery training and service provision, the Canadian ambassador said on Tuesday.

In partnership with the Afghan government, United Nations and NGO partners, Canada supports programmes for training midwives and will establish 49 Family Health Houses in the province of Daikundi.

Each house would have delivery and examination rooms, in which trained community midwives could safely work, Ambassador Deborah Lyons said in a statement.

In her message on International Midwife Day, she said Canada was proud to support midwives in Afghanistan, many of whom were working in rural areas at great personal risk.

Canada’s efforts also help reduce malnutrition by addressing the basic nutritional needs of women and children in nine provinces of Afghanistan.

Addressing the underlying and immediate causes of maternal and child mortality in remote and inaccessible areas of Bamyan and Badakhshan was also a priority, she added.
