TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Takhar has won a taekwondo tournament featuring several teams from northern and northeastern provinces, officials said on Friday.
Baghlan finished second and Kunduz grabbed the third position in the event played at the Taloqan Municipality ground, Afghanistan Taekwondo Federation member Roohullah Mosawi said.
Takhar Sports Director Naqibullah Jalili told Pajhwok Afghan News the results would encourage provincial players in addition to helping efforts at promoting taekwondo.
He said the tournament was aimed at tapping taekwondo talent in the zone and raising a future national squad.
Trials for selection of the national team would be held soon in Kabul, he said, adding individuals winning gold medals at the provincial level would attend the camp.
A player from Takhar, Mumtaz, said: “I’m proud of winning the first position in 50-kilogram category. I want to be the future champion…”
