HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Eighty percent of work on the Indian-funded Salam dam, a mega hydropower and irrigation project in western Herat province, has been completed, the governor said on Sunday.
Syed Fazlullah Wahidi, accompanied by Indian Consul General Amit Kumar Mishra and Herat police chief Samiullah Qatra, paid a visit to the under-construction dam on the Hari River basin in Chasht Sharif district.
Wahidi told reporters at the site the remaining construction work on the dam would be completed by the end of the current year.
Without naming any state, the governor said some countries had been trying in the past to stop work on the dam, but such attempts had been thwarted.
“We have put in place enough security measures and have deployed police and army personnel to maintain security at the site,” the governor said, promising completion of the project.
Mishra said 200 Indian workers were engaged on the project and there had been no impediment to the dam’s construction. He added the dam was being reconstructed at a cost $300 million.
The project was the biggest funded by India in a foreign country, said the diplomat, who insisted they wanted the construction work to be completed soon.
The police chief said they would protect the dam by utilising all available resources. The dam, once completed, is estimated to produce 42 megawatts of electricity, besides irrigating thousands of hectares of land.
