KABUL (Pajhwok): The Senate on Sunday amended Article 19 of the Election Law, enabling lawmakers to contest polls without resigning their lower house membership.

Article 19 of the law says: “In case one of elected members, including nominated senators, intends to run for another elected seat, he/she is obliged to resign the membership of the current seat.”

During Sunday’s session, the Legislative Commission suggested an amendment to the article, said the panel’s deputy head, Mohammad Hasan Hotak.

He said under the proposed amendment, parliamentarians running for Wolesi Jirga seats were exempted from the resignation condition.

Of the 62 members present, 55 voted for the amendment. Hotak said the amended Election Law would go to the Wolesi Jirga before being sent to the president for signing.
