QALAT/MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): Ten Taliban militants, including a commander, and a public order police officer were killed during separate incidents of violence in southern Zabul province, officials said on Tuesday.

Zabul police chief, Col Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai, told Pajhwok Afghan News seven militants were killed and three policemen injured during a clash in Nawbahar district late on Monday.

The clash broke out after a group of insurgents attacked a police post in the area.

Separately, two fighters were killed in a police ambush in the Omki area of Qalat, the provincial capital, on Tuesday morning.

Rogh Lewanai said one public order policeman was killed and another wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside in Nawkhiz area of Qalat.

In a separate incident, Taliban militants blew up a bridge on the Kabul-Kandahar highway near Qalat, halting traffic flows.

Security forces had reached the site to restore traffic movement, Rogh Lewanai said.

A Taliban commander, Mullah Halim Zabulwal, was killed and three of accomplices were wounded during an operation in Arghandab district on Monday.

The district police chief, Lt Col Abdul Rahman, confirmed the operation in Tawoos Khel area, saying some weapons and ammunition had also been seized.

But Taliban claimed 10 foreign troops and more than 20 Afghan security men had been killed in a series of attacks in various Zabul towns.

Elsewhere, three militants, including a commander, were wounded during clashes with security forces in central Maidan Wardak province.

The governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, said another four militants were detained during operations in Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital, and Jaghatu district.
