LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Another three policemen were killed under mysterious circumstances in the Marja district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday morning, an official said.
Unidentified gunmen entered a police post and fired at those on duty in the Koro Square area on the outskirts of the district centre at 7am, a security official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The source said the gunmen in police uniforms also seized weapons and a pick-up from the post. It was the third such attack in as many days in the restive province, where militants have recently stepped up their activities.
Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the incident and said two Afghan Local Police (ALP) members were killed and two others wounded.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed four policemen including their commander were killed by one of the fighters who had infiltrated police ranks.
At least 12 policemen have recently been killed in similar incidents in Helmand. Two days back, seven policemen were killed mysteriously in Sangin district.
